vintage wedding invitation ideas

Hi there,

I am making the invitations etc for my daughters wedding next year, and she wants a vintage theme. Everything that I have looked at and any ideas i have mentioned seem to be "too modern".

Her fiance wants classy and elegant and not to OTT, she wants vintage.

The colour scheme is cobalt blue, silver and white- any ideas would be appreciated. We have seen pocket fold envelopes with a tapestry background from paperbox, and she likes this style of invite. They also match everything so once we have the design everything else will follow!

What is vintage? :rotfl:

The plan is to do a few mock ups and mix and match to get the finished article, so as many ideas as possible to help would be great.

Thanks in anticipation

Ive just googled the words "cobalt blue wedding invitations" on google images and its thrown up quite a few pics which might help inspire you

    something like this maybe

    or an adaptation of this

    Simple style

Dependant on your craft skill something like this could be modified to a more vintage look with maybe some lace or small seed pearl strands

is there another colour that you are using with the wedding...maybe ivory or silver?....or fuchia pink...very striking

Another option might be to have cobalt blle envelopes which will carry the colour theme rather than the invites themelves....that could look rather nice and an unusual touch

This one is very simple but could again be customised to a more vintage feel or add another colour to

Our invites were a portrait pocket fold. We used a couple of art nouveau fonts, a formal ornate drop capital font for large text and a more legible styled font for all the body text, the same fonts are being used for venue signage, and just about everything we need for the wedding. We also used a fairly simple motif which appears as a background print under the text for the inserts. The same motif appears on our wedding rings, on Herself's dress (or so I'm informed) and will be incorporated into the table decorations and the wedding cake.
The consistent use of font, motif and colour helps tie everything together.
We started along the lines you're thinking of, with a pile of mock-ups and deciding which factors worked and which needed adaption. In our case we started with gold and green as the colours, quickly realised that neither worked well in terms of printing our own invites, so we added cream paper and card (and black ink). The eventual design was a forest green pocketfold, with cream inserts, we found our motif was available as a diecut card cutout in green and gold, these became the seals on the pocketfolds. We used cream envelopes for mailing.

We had two starting points as far as the design was concerned, the motif and a range of fonts. We played with various formats, from scrolls through straightforward cards before settling on the idea of pocketfolds - largely because they gave us the option of a lot of space for information without looking too text heavy.

As for what is "vintage" I'd look at four particular styles: Arts and Crafts, Art Noveau, Art Deco and Forties/Fifties and see what appeals. A search for any of those styles as fonts in google images should give you a good selection of possible styles.

The wedding is held outdoors under a gorgeous, ancient tree. Old books are mixed with flowers, ribbons and lace for Vintage-style table decor, while suspended bird cages are filled with roses for a whimsical effect.
Floral arrangements are displayed in silver ornamental dishes, and the tables are set with ornate silver cutlery.
    Is that Ok?

Thank you for your ideas so far, and I now feel more inspired.:j

Does anyone know where to buy vintage style craft papers? I have looked on ebay and in our local Hobbycraft, and most seem to come in mixed packs, whereas I am only going to want the chosen design.

I found a local craft shop to be very helpful. Generally I buy parchment papers from a paper merchant, they buy in A0 sheets and guillotine them down to the size I need, generally this means ordering in lots of 200 or 250 sheets but works out fairly reasonable. You may find that some of the ebay sellers will be willing to sell just one design from a mixed pack - always worth asking the seller.

Pinterest can be quite good for inspiration

Though I particularly like this one - a bit of lace but not too OTT. Swap the text colour for cobalt blue and away you go! Pic link Possibly even use a bit of silver string.

It can be difficult, I had very set ideas on what the invites should look like, a mix of modern and classic. H2B had changed some of the font to modern, I told him "Noo! It has to be Script! Script I tell you!"
