Daewoo DVD Bargain(?) @ Play.com

I've been looking for a decent DVD player with a USB port so I can connect a hard disk and watch .mpg and .avi movies, and I've found this one on Play.com;

Daewoo DV2500H DVD player

It seems to be a good spec for the price, but I can't find any reviews on it or a proper instruction manual for more detail. It looks like it's been on sale in Germany for a while, and the info I've found suggest it may have a USB2.0 port, DivX & Xvid compatibility and 1080i/720p upscaling ability, but I'm still hesitant.

For anybody braver than me it could be a bargain!

:)

That model doesn't appear to have the USB port that the OP wants though.

Ive just received an email from svp which includes info about a Umax Kazuki DVD-2800X MPEG4/DivX/DVD Player for £29.99. Info here

If you spend a little more you would qualify for the £10 off via google checkout.

But that one says it only plays images and music through the card slot and USB -

perhaps someone can advise here - is it normal not to be able to play movie files through USB or cards? are there any machines that can do that? Or am i reading the specs wrong?

    You make an interesting point.

On the details of most players it only refers to JPGs and MP3s via the card reader or USB port, but then when you look up the reviews on them there are usually plenty of users that report good results playing AVIs and MPGs from cards, sticks and external hard disks (but they must be formatted FAT32, not NTFS, and if it's a big drive with more than one partition the player will only detect files in the primary one).

I'm hoping to get a player to use with the 500GB USB2.0 external drive I've just bought from Aldi, and Pixmania have some very well priced ones with USB ports, but reading the reviews the build quality seems lacking. The Daewoo I've found at Play.com seems better built, but I can't find the kind of info I need to make a buying decision.

I can't make up my mind whether to take a flyer on it, or just wait until Lidl or Aldi offer the Silvercrest, Medion or Tevion equivalent - they are usually good value.

The Umax DVD-7500X DivX DVD Player & CD Ripper from SVP definitely plays AVI etc via the USB port as I bought one for our daughter.
Never argue with an idiot. He will bring you down to his level and beat you with experience.

  • Yes - it's a good spec for £36 and I'm waiting for them to email me when it comes back into stock, but looking at some of the user reviews for it (and UMAX/Yamada players in general) on SVP and PIXmania the build quality doesn't seem that good - has yours been ok?

Trouble is with stuff like this you start with a basic requirement like a USB port, and now I've convinced myself I really need HDMI just in case we get an LCD panel for the front room (which is why the Daewoo caught my eye).

I bet I end up getting an LG Super Multi Blue (hang on - has that got a USB port? I can't see one - ARRGGH!).

Asked my daughter about it and she's very happy with it as she uses it a lot as a DVD player and the USB for DIVX and for music.
