Cycling to work?

  • Also I'd invest in a pair of puncture resistant tyres as I cant be bothered with faffing about with changing inner tubes outside. I can do it, but its a pain. On my old mountain bike, I had some kevlar lined tyres which seemed to do the trick.

Thanks for all your replies :)

I think I will take OH out for a few trial rides once we move and see how we get on. Would be nice to feel fitter, even if I do it a few times a week.

I do need to get used to the roads as well; OH and I went out last year (I think) and I found it really daunting on the road I must admit.

Good luck with getting started Lilith! Like others, I'd suggest only starting with 2 or 3 days a week, or even cycle in one day, get the bus home and back again the next morning leaving the bike at work if you can and ride home the second day. Depends how fit you are now. I used to do 10 miles each way across London until we moved - now it's only 4 miles I often choose to walk instead as I miss the time outside!

If you can't have a shower you might try taking a complete change of clothes for the office (undies and everything), feels much fresher I find.

And arrive in time for your red cheeks to cool down before you face your colleagues, of you're anything like me!
    Edited to add:
The Borough my office is in offers a free one to one 'cycling safely on the road' session to anyone who lives, works or studies in the area so might be worth checking to see if yours does something similar. Even got a voucher for a local bike shop for going along to mine!

Change of undies, baby wipes, maybe some skimpier or looser clothing. I have gossamer fine knickers (virtually see through, sold as seam free) that are amazing for reducing sweating, silky microfibre socks are better than even cotton-lycra wicking IMO.

If you have somewhere secure to store the bike you could start out cycling in Monday, bus home, bus in Tues, cycle home, Wednesday bus both ways, Thurs and Fri as Mon and Tues. I might not save you loads of cash initially, but you will ease your body in gently.

Lucky you, I wish I worked near enough to cycle in.

Good idea to start off with only cycling two/three days. If you alternate you will have the day between to recover. Also start getting out on your bike now to build up bike fitness. O/H and I cycle a fair bit and when we started last summer a three mile trip seemed like a marathon, now I can easily cycle for thirty!

You won't need to wear much as you will soon warm up. Think about investing in some padded shorts to protect your bum, at first even short rides used to make my bum sore. Lidl and Aldi do cycling gear sometimes. Lidl have just had theirs but Aldi have got one coming so have a look.
