I've started having a go at making my own bread by hand. At the same time, totally independently, my mum bought be a baking book which is full of lovely recipes and tips for both bread and cakes. And I've been cruising this website trying to gather up some yummy ideas to try too.
The trouble is, quite a few recipes refer to using a loaf tin. I have one in the cupboard which I bought many moons ago for making meatloaf. I just have no idea what size it might be. Is there a way to figure it out so I can work out which recipes are suitable? If I go to the shops to compare, I'll end up purchasing loads of baking paraphenalia - I can't help myself
It is roughly 4 inches wide, maybe 7 or 8 inches long and probably about 4 or 5 inches deep, with slightly sloping sides. Any clue whether this is likely to be a 1lb, 2lb or something-else-lb tin?

My guess is that its a 2lb loaf tin. If you imagine turning out a loaf from it (which would be about an inch higher than the tin) would it be the size of a shop bought fruit loaf or a small crusty white? If the former, it is probably a 1lb tin and if the latter a 2lb tin. If it is the size of a sliced white loaf then a 3lber.0

I would guess it's a 2lb tin too. I have some Lakeland liners for a 2lb loaf tin and the size is shown as 7.5 ins x 3.5 ins x 2.5 ins.0

If I remember rightly a tin measuring 17 x 11 x 8cm produces a 500g loaf. A tin measuring 19 x 12 x 9cm produces a 1kg loaf. So yours would be just above 2lbs (2.2 ish). Hope that helps and feel free to post pictures when you've baked'I solemnly swear that I am up to no good'0
