The usual;-
commencement date
permanent/temporary/fixed term
basic salary
variable amounts - overtime/bonus/commission and if guaranteed/regular
prospects/certainty of position - consultation/redundancy risk.
These are standard and tend to be the same lender to lender, not just for one.I am a mortgage broker. This is unusual so be aware that must be something in the income keyed, employment type or company type that has led them to do this.
This is there last resort from a verification perspective and as Kings. says it will look to validate information already provided and potentially if you have high dependency on bonus/overtime etc. will look to confirm these.

I'm in a similar boat to OP but am self employed, have been told by broker that Halifax (lender) are to contact my accountant today (presumably to cross reference info given and ask other questions that may be outstanding?) I would like to know if this is also unusual like you have said with the income reference check? And what you think chances of being approved are? (£70K joint income, 15% deposit)

Sorry cannot comment on your likely chances of success, although if everything has been declared and keyed appropriately then you will be fine.
Halifax will not send for references/valuation if they fundamentally do not like the case.
An accountant reference for self employed applicants is much, much more commonplace for Halifax than an employment reference.
All the best both..!I am a Mortgage Broker
