My partners Tax Code

Can someone in the know please advise me before we phone the tax office?

My partner has been working for a cleaning company part time for the last 6 years. She works 16 hours per week.

Her annual income from this job is approx £7500 each year, give or take a hundred either side.

She has no other job.

She gets Child tax credits of £60 a week.

She has NEVER had any sort of tax rebate.

I have just checked her most recent payslip, March 2013, and her tax code is 543L.

is this correct? This seems like a very old code to me, and i was under the impression that the last ywar / 2 years, we are allowed to earn upto 7k? 8k? a year tax free?

Can someone advise please?

If she digs out her coding notice that would have been received from HMRC it will explain how they have worked out the 543 code

    2011-12 £7475, 2012-13 £8105, 2013-14 £9440.
No other way than phoning the tax office. She should have received a P2 at some stage to show why she has a non standard tax code.

Paperwork (& our lifes) have been very disorganised for the lst few years.

Are they not on strike today? Also, today not a good day to phone IR due to new tax year.
  • we just got through to them, :D

Her tax code has been wrong since April 2009!

    WIN!

although, Tax office said they cant sort her rebate / refund out, she needs to do it herself and send evidence and her P60? and should be sorted by September?

    hmmm
