Hello, I have no idea when it comes to computers so if anyone has some knowledge rather than guessing like myself it would be greatly appreciated.
Yesterday my husband says he had a pop up on the computer which says he needs to update our flash player so he clicked on it, he said it all looked "legit" until the end whe it downloaded 3 or 4 "things" After then a "Microsoft something wrong with your computer" kept popping up - which clearly didn't look legit to me.

On the home page there's was an icon that said "OPTIMIZER" so I right click ad deleted it straight away (read now I shouldn't have done that) I turned the computer off and pressed F8 as it was re starting - it didn't do anything or go into "safe mode" so I ran a quick scan on norton and it came back with a few tracking cookies and said they were sorted but nothing else. I started doing a full noton scan but it was still doing it 30 minutes later and I then realised if norton didn't detect my husband pressing in the dodgy popup in the first place - it probably wouldn't detect any thing wrong this time?!

So I went into settings and tried to restore the computer toa previous date - the 1/4/13 - it wouldn't let me as couldn't acess a file, it suggested disabling noton and redoing - which I did - it worked that time.

So my computers is "restored" to a previous date, do I need to run a full norton scan? And is there anything else I need to do? Delete? Ive read the optimizer virus is moderate/difficult to delete and is malicious. I am so useless with computers it's unreal, this is the first time iv had to deal with a virus on our computer, I'm worried about going on my emails or online banking, has any body who has any knowledge shine some light on it?

I'm currently on a different computer

Apologies for any spelling mistakes or incorrect use of "tech" words! We have a Sony touch screen with windows 8 and norton 360

I'll be on here most f the day b4 I have to go off to work tonight - thank you!! If I do need to do anything patronising baby steps WILL help lol

If you can download and run Malwarebyes on the other machine it would be a help.
You'd need to install it, update it and then run a full scan (might take some time).
Let it fix everything it finds (you might to tick a few boxes) and then post the log it creates on this thread.
You could always run on on-line virus scan or download the Avast rescue disc and boot from that (depending on how comfortable you are with "techie" stuff.

    Malwarebytes can be found here:
    http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&!!!!!button
(You need the green button near the top).

Can't find a link to the Avast rescue disc but someone should be able to supply.

Oh god that looks like a different language!

Can anyone explain how will I know if it's "sorted" - is it just when the dodgy Microsoft pop up stops coming up? Or will there be other stuff definatley lingering?

Also my husband has the same password for the login in for the computer as everything else!! Ie email bank etc - iv told him b4 this is stupid but he insists the is just too many to remember - will the password be definatly compromised now??

Ok so the computer I'm using that is NOT infected is an iPad, I can't insert a cd into it so I can't do the above suggested.

Do you people think I might be just better taking it to someone to fix? Due to my lack of knowledge, if so where would people reccomended? I purchased it from pc world.

    Thank you

On the computer with the problem do this - take it slowly, step by step and ask if you need help with any part of it.

Post me a DDS log - should take 2-3 minutes.

Download DDS from the link below and save it to your desktop:

    Link

After you've downloaded it and saved it to your desktop:
    • Double click DDS to run it.
    • Click Start
    • When it's finished, DDS will open two logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
Save both reports to your desktop.

Copy & paste the contents of just DDS.txt for now and post it here (you may need to split the log over separate posts)
