Hi guys I was just wondering if anyone could help me, Ive had a good look at different cars recenlty found the fiesta tdci to be a very good car for this price cheap tax, good mpg, insurance and build), but im thinking maybe a large hatchback or estate car would be better, I see that there are focus and mondaeo tdci s that look good, but ive also found volvos and saabs that fall into this category, what is the best all round for mpg insurance and tax I guess all round best value.

Thanks in advance

Best MPG for city work in heavy traffic = a tiny engine.

Best MPG for high speed motorway work = a larger diesel engine.

2007 Mondeo diesel for £2000 ish... 60+ MPG on the motorway.

No such thing as a best car or best mpg / tax / insurance.

Your insurance company may charge 10x more for a Mondeo than another company.

At this price point, buy on condition, not make/model.

I'm looking at estate at the moment too - I have the terrible situation of the car needing to do short trips daily but want an estate for dogs and people! current car is costing a fortune to run on short trips so even a bad estate will have comparable mpg!
would love to get an audi/volvo as i think they look best, but at the lower price range I'd be more tempted to go with a petrol vectra or mondeo estate (only going from my research so far!)

Volvo 240! Not cool or fashionable but my god, if you want space and reliability you can't beat it! We bought our 1992 one as a stopgap between selling our old car and finding a suitable van for OH's work and we're really struggling to bring ourselves to part with it. They go on forever - ours, at 140,000 is, by the general standard, only just run in and actually they're not as expensive to run as I had originally thought.

7th Gen Honda Civic (2002 - 2005) has plenty of room for people and a pretty large boot for 1 or 2 dogs... they do a 1.7 diesel which is pretty economical

Wow thanks guys, I have a fiesta zetec at the moment 1.25 so according to forgotmyname I porb have the best car for what I need the only question is space. That why I was looking at estates and larger hatcbacks.

I do use my car for mainly driving in the city, so it seems my car is right, I want to get a newer car so was looking at the newer fiesta or possibly something a bit bigger.

Is it true then that diesels arent any good in the city and the only point in getting diesels is if you do more then 8000miles a year? Which would mean not getting a tdci?

Boot space is the most important so either an estate or large boot namely focus, volvo s40 or vw polo.

    Thanks again everyone.

I would say 15,000 miles + a year for a diesel, and certainly not for city driving.

Diesels take ages to warm up. Sometimes with just low speed driving it may not get upto temperature properly.

If its got a turbo as vitually all diesels do these days, You dont want to push it when cold.
Since i got the diesel i drive the long way around now to give the oil a chance to warm up before joining the main roads.

Ok Thanks again so I guess im looking at a 1.2 vw polo or 1.2 fiesta possibly 04 or 05, from what Ive researched there isnt much between them only vw hold there price more and may cost a bit more with a few extra bits.

Does anyone have a preference, is there much to check on these, I know some fiestas you have to check the sills I believe due to our weather?

    Does anyone have a favourite.

    Cheers
