End of year tax P87 form

Hi,

Just looking for some confirmation that i am doing the correct things here.

I am a mechanic. I have to provide my own tools for my job thus i am allowed to claim the tax back on my tools or "expenses"

I found this out in Jan this year, so i did a tax return for the year 11-12 (as told to by HMRC) because my expenses went over the £2500 limit. That all went through fine and i was given £583 back :D

Whilst i was doing that though i was made aware of the P87 form which is for employment expenses under £2500

So for the tax year 12-13 i spent £1051 on tools.

Now here's the bit im concerned about. Back in Jan when i did that self return they told me i can get a £120 allowance into my tax code for tools. So my tax code changed and i was sent a letter to confirm this, but the letter says this is for the year 13-14.

So i would assume i am correct in saying that i have received nothing back for the year 12-13 (which i haven't) ?

I ask because the P87 form ask how much have you spent and how much have you received back. So it needs to be correct.

Since you did your 11/12 return in January it is highly likely that you have already been pre-selected to complete one for 12/13 whether your expenses were below £2500 or not in that year. If this is the case you can't submit a P87. Check with HMRC if they are expecting you to complete a tax return for 2012/2013.

If there was no increase in your 12/13 code then you are right to assume you haven't been given tax relief at source for that year.

Thanks, that confirms what i thought.

I did a self return because HMRC told me to do one, i am employed rather than self employed. Can i call them to get out of having to do a self return for this year ?
