I am due a tax refund for the year just gone as I was put on emergency tax. What do I need to send HMRC so they can sort it out? Is it quicker to send stuff myself or allow them to do it automatically from when my work sends end of year statement?

I don't think you can do anything before you've had your P60 from work, that will confirm that you've got a record of your earnings and tax paid over the year.
But I'd be proactive, yes ...Signature removed for peace of mind0
