employer disclosing personal details?

I've been off sick from work (with a GP certificate) for a few weeks.
One of my colleagues (trusted) has informed me that my manager has been discussing my sickness/personal details with her, I'm returning to work tomorrow and would appreciate any advice, thank you.
Kind regards, omnipeta.

Is the colleague one of your managers? If not they can not do that as its confidential.

Guessing if your manager at work can tell staff about why you have been off ill etc

    Is that not private

Before you go back and start complaining make sure your friend will back you up in writing, because if they wont, you will be in a whole load of trouble.

If it's something basic (ie that's you're off sick) then it's reasonable that someone might ask if you're on leave etc. If it's disclosing personal details that you've only discussed with your manager, then they shouldn't share this with your colleagues without your permission. Health related issues are covered under the data protection act, they should be confidential and are something that should only revealed with your permission.

I guess it might make sense to find out exactly what has been said and in what context. It would be reasonable to ask your manager not to talk about these things without your permission, and it may depend on exactly how sensitive the information was as to how you far you want to take it.

Thank you for the advice, I spoke to the manager concerned this morning and expressed my concerns that my absence/sickness had been discussed with other colleagues whilst I was away.
Manager apologised and I've decided to accept the apology and leave it like that.
Thanks again for the advice, kind regards, omnipeta.

Thanks for the update , it looks like by you handling correctly, your manager realizes they have made a mistake and doesnt want to make it worse (for them !).

Follow it up with a friendly email confirming the conversation (you never know what might come about in the future) then put it behind you (but keep the email!)

Say nothing, at least for the time being.

Return to work and get the lie of the land before raising issues.
