Tax refund. Am I entitled?

Ok I'm not sure of whether I'm entitled or not so I'll just ask for a bit of advice.

In August 2010-October 2010 my partner had a temporary job and earnt roughly 2500 during that period, the rest of the time he was on jsa, he was taxed roughly 300 during that time.

I worked part time from October 2010 - August 2012 and earnt roughly 600 a month, I was taxed around 70 a month.

I was just wondering whether we would be eligible for a tax refund and how we would go about it?

I have been terrible with keeping finances in order and haven't got any payslips etc, I'm just starting to realise everything is important and that ive got myself in a mess. Would I be able to request new documents or could they check whether I am eligible for a refund online?

I'm rubbish with all this stuff so sorry for the long post. And thanks in advance for any help.

Without payslips, P45s, knowing what your tax code was etc I can't see that this is going to be easy.

Whilst payslips, P45s and P60s are invaluable when trying to sort out this type of problem it could well be worthwhile for both you and your partner to phone HMRC.

You will each have to phone about your own case because your tax affairs are confidential to you.

If you can give HMRC your employers’ names and addresses together with the approximate dates of each employment it is entirely possible that HMRC will be able to trace your employment history and check whether you are entitled to a repayment.

    Give it a try.
