Tax return

in Cutting tax
I work for a Shopfitting company and pay my tax through paye, I am also self employed so complete a tax return at the yr end.
When I work for the Shopfitting company I receive an allowance in my wages of £13 per day towards meals and get 25p per mile paid in my wages for using my own vehicle because this goes in my wages I get taxed on both and it increases my yr end total. Am I right in thinking I can put it in my tax return as an expense and claim the tax back?

It would help if there was a little more explanation as to why and where.
In your PAYE job do you stay awauy from home, why is there a meal allowance.
If you use your car for your employer's business he should pay you expenses.
25p per mile is on the mean side and he should not deduct PAYE and, presumably, NI. You can then claim 20p per mile against your tax ie 4p per mile in your pocket.
But your skinflint employer has taxed it all so he hasn't paid you any expenses at all and you can claim 45p per mile (up to 10,000 miles, 25p per mile thereafter) against your tax ie 9p in your pocket. The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
Surely it isn't in the employer's interest to tax the expense payments as it must increase their NI liability as well? Just poor admin all round...Sealed Pot Challenge #239
