Not so long ago I bought a ticket from Brighton to Bristol, leaving at 7.15 in the morning.

The National Rail site allowed this as an off peak return, and ticket inspectors didn't bat an eyelid.

If I'd been on the same first leg train but with a ticket to London, it'd be a peak ticket.

Essentially, a journey is 'off peak' if you can buy an off peak ticket for it.
  • and on virgin trains. if u have a railcard card u can travel peak times with an off peak ticket
