Cancelling FitnessFirst membership

My son (stupidly) joined Fitness First then unfortunatly lost his job and couldn't afford the membership any longer of £30+. He asked to cancel but they wouldn't him instead "allowing" him to pay only £8.95 for the rest of his contract, around 12 months and wasn't allowed to use the gym.
This finished a couple of months ago when thay started taking £28.95 for some reason.
He queryed this and was told that in fact his membership had been "Frozen" and that after 12 months it started again at the full amont.
After much argument they "Agreed" to "Refreeze" his membership at £8.95 seemingly forever.
As he's moving away from home and dosn't need it now anyway, how can his membership be canceled permanatly?

Has he read the terms and conditions on the contract he signed or the guidance on the website? Usually you have to pay for the full year, the freeze period does not count. There are a fair few Fitness Firsts although fewer than there used to be: could he transfer to a club where he lives now?
"5. If you want to stop going to the club for a while, you can freeze your membership for a reduced fee, for between one month and a year. You cannot freeze your membership within your first two months. If you freeze your membership within your minimum payment term, these ‘frozen months’ do not count towards your minimum contract length."

"Or... If your circumstances have changed due to redundancy, financial hardship or sickness and you can provide professional documentation to support this we'll discuss cancelling your membership."

Thank you Fire Fox.
Will get him to write a letter pointing out he's moving out of the area and will have no chance of using any club. Hopefully they will agree to cancel his membership completely.0
