There's a new type of envy about. My friend Emma was describing her outfit for an upcoming wedding, when she suddenly whipped out her iPad. But this flourish of tech hardware was not to trawl shopping websites. Oh no, this show-off moment was much more futuristic… Emma was showing me the dresses she already owned via her very own virtual wardrobe. In that moment, I not only had dress envy but tech envy.
Despite being a total luddite, I can see that this system created by Vault Couture is a winner. Here were Emma's pretty party dresses all beautifully photographed on her very own app. There was also her endless collection of little black dresses and hoardes of black shoes.
"It's amazing," explained Emma. "Vault Couture sent four super-efficient girls in white lab coats, who wrapped up my clothes, took them away to be photographed, 48 hours later everything was back and now I have this," she said proudly pointing to her virtual wardrobe. "Now I can work out what to pack, I can plan my evening's outfit while I'm at work and when I go shopping I can see what I've already got, what goes with what and stop myself from buying the very same dress all over again."
And the Vault Couture options don't stop there. Personal stylists will put together head-to-toe looks saved to your app, so there's never a last minute panic. And if you have more clothes than wardrobe space, or you want to pack away your winter/summer gear there are massive moth-free, temperature-controlled vaults where garments are wrapped in acid-free paper and kept in breathable bags. And if you happen to be in Australia and suddenly can't live without that Christopher Kane dress it can be immediately whizzed to you. Or you're going on holiday, send a list of the stored clothes you'd like to take with you and they'll magic their way to your hotel or villa without you having to lift a finger.
For businessmen who come to London and want to travel light but can't show up to meetings looking crumpled, they can store suits at the vaults. And if they've run out of shirts or need a new tie, the Vault Couture team will procure them.
Vault Couture will also, if you want, sort out your dry cleaning, send seamstresses to repair or alter your clothes and if you're a bit bored of your old clothes or bags, arrange for it all to be sold.
