What were gifting/tax rules pre Finance Act 2006?

If a house was given by a parent to their child in 1988 and the parent continued to live in the house rent-free, and died in 1999, would this gift have counted as an asset of the deceased's estate for inheritance tax purposes?

And what if the house had been sold in 1996, and the child had loaned the sale proceeds to the parent?

The rules for GWR changed during 1999, what month in 1999 did the Donor die ?

Did they sell the house in 1996 (after its transfer in 1988) or is this aspect of the query a hypothetical q ?

Whats the purpose of the post, do you have HMRC woe's in relation to this ?

And, for CGT purposes (if that is also a query) did the transfer take place before 5th April in 1988?
