Service debt help required!

Don't know if this is the right forum for this but:

A work colleague needs a bit of legal help!

She put her car into a garage for a new clutch and service which took 2 weeks and said to the garage that she will pay in full by the 1st of June 2007. The garage were initially happy with that but now are saying that they want full payment ASAP otherwise they are taking the car as payment for work done (the car is worth £3500)?

Can they do this?

There is nothing in the agreement for works that says they can do this but they are threatening legal action against her and seeking legal advice. How would she stand on this?

She acknowledges the debt and agrees to pay on 1st June but is worried that they will come to her house and get the car and she will lose out completely!

The bill is for £850 in total so less than the car is worth.
