Benefits of Linseed/Flaxseed for ladies of a certain age!

After much googling and experimenting (as in I will try anything!!!) I have found (as in it works for me) that ground linseed seems to stop hot flushes!

It takes a few weeks to kick in but I have found that a couple of teaspoons of ground linseed in the morning and 1 teaspoon in the evening sprinked on food - it doesn't taste of anything seems to have stopped by about 90% my hot flushes.

Also it seems to be a good all round super food so even if it doesn't work for this for everyone it still has the benefits of the omegas I think?

You can take up to 4 tbs per day I believe so it can be experimented with.:j

It's good for other things too, as it is full of fibre!

I get through tons of the stuff! I take 3 dessertspoons full mixed with water every morning, and drink it down. Hasn't done much for the night sweats unfortunately, but it is very helpful for my gut as I as suffer from Ulcerative Colitis. I think it 'oils' the gut, aids digestion and helps transit time.

I grind about a week's supply, and keep it in the fridge, as it can go rancid if kept too long. I've found the cheapest and best place to buy it is Amazon, where I get 2.5kg bags of Suma Organic Golden Linseeds. The little boxes you can buy in supermarkets are horrendously expensive!

I take a tablespoon soaked in water in the morning and one in the evening. Not ground though, just the seeds as they are. Meant to have a teaspoon of lecithin with them too (although I can't remember the reason why!)

Need to be ground to release the fats, proteins and minerals, the human body cannot digest whole linseeds. Lecithin is supposed to help you break down lipids, I can't see any logic in taking it alongside ground flaxseed which is a source of lecithin/ phosphatidylcholine anyway. Certainly not alongside whole since the oils are trapped behind the seed coat, plus the lecithin may be solvent extracted.

Ground seeds can be frozen to last much longer, you can purchase ground in reflective ziplock bags then reuse that bag for your own grindings.

I have bought packets of linseeds which say best eaten ground or crushed, I googled and saw they need to be be crushed.

    How do you grind them?

Also, I bought a few packets of omega mix, but the linseeds (17% of the pack) are not ground in the packet.

How do you know when they have gone bad?

I wouldn't try grinding them yourself - I tried in a pestle and mortar (impossible) and in my magimix small bowl attachment (no good). Didn't try them in my mini grinder though.

But I now buy it ready ground - though date isn't that long on it hence why it's prob best to grind your own if poss.

I'm not of 'a certain age' but I have it being a veggie for the omega. I add it to bread, cakes, biscuits, anything really.

Also have the oil for salads.

Believe it says to make sure you drink enough when using this!

Using some from the Flax Farm at the moment (online or farmer's markets). Didn't think of Amazon but happy with current supplier anyway :)

I have ordered the suggested ones from amazon yesterday and they are a lot cheaper.

I use a blended to grind mine and do enough for the week.

As other poster has said if you do not grind it it goes straight through you the same way sweetcorn does and you do not get the benefits.

Another thing it is supposed to be good for is fighting cancer. There is supposed to be some kind of diet were you have the linseed with cottage cheese. I found this out when I was googling.

It's really easy to grind them in a coffee grinder. I bought a small black Krups one from Amazon for £10, but that was a few years ago. It's brilliant, and I just do a small amount at a time and keep it in a storage box in the fridge.

Not sure how you would know it's off - presumably from the smell, but I find that about one week's worth is fine.

The small packets of ready ground linseeds are so dear if you are comsuming a decent amount to make a difference!

Thanks guess I need to order a coffee grinder but still confused why the Omega mix has 17% whole linseeds in it.

All other seeds can be eaten whole?
