My business, a job or both? In a dilemma!

To cut a long story short ……I was made redundant, went on JSA, told about New Enterprise allowance, started my own business, have run it now for nearly a year, but it hasn’t taken off as I’d hoped and I’m starting to struggle financially. I’ve managed up till now on my redundancy money and savings but these are dwindling and what I make from my business is paltry at present. I can’t even afford to invest in marketing to try to improve the business.
Anyway, I’ve applied for a really good well-paid full time job and have got an interview with them shortly.
What I’m wondering is should I close down the business now that it’s the end of the tax year and I could just submit tax return and be done with it? Plus when I go to the interview will this look better than if I’m still classed as running a business? Or should I try to continue to build the business on the side as extra income and safety net? Obviously I don’t know at this stage if I will get the job?! Not sure how running a business and having a job affects my tax position though? And obviously also wondering what’s best to say at the interview about the business so I don’t jeopardise getting the job?
You’ve always been a great help on here so hoping you guys will come up with some great words of wisdom and guidance :)

  • Be honest about the business, but in a positive light. Say you're building slowly but steadily and are looking to improve.

Don't talk about it like it's a weight around your neck - talk about how it's a challenge but an exciting one that you are always looking to improve on. Don't appear defeatist.

Talk about what you're doing to market the business without investing hugely (if you aren't doing much, do more!)

    Hello,
I'm being a nosey beggar and just popping by to say good luck with your interview, that is awesome that it is a good job and I hope whatever they ask at the interview it goes really well.
I don't think it should matter too much if you have a full time job and do the other work in your spare time.

I'd maybe suggest if you're not comfortable with the tax return to get an accountant to have a look over it and good luck for the interview.:)

Thanks Johnnythefox and dramarama for your advice and well wishes. Just thought I'd let you know that I had the interview yesterday and as it turned out they asked nothing about my business so I was worrying about nothing. Should hear within 2 weeks so will let you know how I get on. Keep your fingers crossed for me :)
