Paying for Halifax's mistake

We have a mortgage with The Halifax.
We looked at 2 houses before we bought the one we have now & consequently had 2 different mortgage offers from them. When they changed the mortgage offer for the 3rd house they made a mistake & put the extra money on a different product.
They were asked to change it & they said that because of the period of time that had passed since the original offer they would have to put the interest rate up but because this was there fault they would give us compensation.
It took them 3 weeks to get the compensation approved & with the mortgage offer we also recieved a letter dating a month previously stating that unless we completed within the next week we would not recieve the compensation.
Surely this means that they were withholding information that would allow us to recieve the compensation. We were unable to complete inside the week as the vendor was being awkward & didn't get the compensation.
Is there any way we can make them give it to us? Is this legal or lawful?
Cheers
