Advice needed to stop binge eating / craving the unhealthy stuff

I hope I am posting this in the correct section.

I am quite slim and short 5 foot 2, but due to having children I have quite a fat tummy. Infact I would even go as far as saying I look pregnant!

I am trying hard with exercise and am trying to have 3 healthy meals a day.

My problem is I pile my plate up rather than having smaller portions and I constantly crave food!!

I have just eaten a very large tea yet I still feel asthough I want to go in the kitchen and find carp to eat!!

Thyroid issues are also in the family which means I may struggle not to pile the weight on in the future.

My bmi and weight is classed as average.

I will give today as an example of what I have eaten health wise...

Breakfast - special k cereal 1/3 bowl with semi-skimmed milk

Lunch - Carvery (I had 3 tiny roasties and a small yorkie pud) but most of it was veg, veg and more veg (and 1 slice of beef, 1 slice of turkey).

Tea - Lean beef mince, onion, carrot, brocolli, cauliflower, fresh spinach, mushroom, peas, parsley, pepper, red pepper and boiled rice.

I was thinking of trying to avoid all chocolate, crisps and pop completely and instead buying sugar free boiled sweets and allowing myself 5 per day rather than binging on worse foods. Although I will try not to have those sweets. More like a back up plan for binging emergencies?

Exercise I have done today (though I do not exercise every single day, though am going to try to for the next fortnight)... I swam 56 lengths in a 25 metre pool without any resting. And I had a 2 and a half hour walk at a leisurely pace.

According to myfitnesspal I burnt around 900 calories.

Any advice is extremely welcome. I was doing Slim Fast, but a few pointed out the high sugar and fat and I realised because they taste so sweet this was just fueling me even more for craving sweet things.

Sugar is evil!! :) Best of luck. I have followed the diet after trying all the others and swear by it. It advocates eating unprocessed foods which even if you don't lose weight simply cannot be a bad thing.
  • Is there a way of accessing the information of this diet without buying the books?

Have jumbo oats for breakfast with seeds and some fruit.

    Special K is not healthy.

Have brown rice, have wholegrains in general.

Not only Special K, but almost all breakfast cereals contain a lot of sugar, as you can see if you look on the back of the packet. Even the so-called 'healthy' ones. The only one I can think of, off the top of my head, is Shredded Wheat or the mini version, the ones like little straw mattresses. Otherwise, porridge made with oats.

You don't need chocolate and sweets. How do you think I grew up (giving my age away now) on 3 ounces of sweets a week, and a 2-mile walk there and back to the next village to get them?

Beware 'snacking' in the evenings while watching TV.

Before I found wisdom, I became old.
  • Tbh I think stress is a big factor to my binging at the moment. Maybe once the stress is over I will find it much much easier.

2 things that jump out at me:

    1) Special K cereal is nothing but sugar. Change to a brand that's better for you.

    2) How early do you eat your tea? If possible, have an afternoon snack and defer dinner.

If you google the Harcombe diet and look for other references you may find articles that have appeared in newspapers etc that include a 5 day starter plan. Also have a look at the forum on the website. The members on there are really helpful if you have questions. Some parts of the forum you have to pay to post on but others are free and it's all free to look at.
  • Try preparing a bowl of raw veggies to keep in the fridge so when you fancy a snack you have something easy and ready to grab. Don't buy sweets/choc. If its not there you can't eat it.

I do understand. I've just opened my fridge door 3 times in 5 mins. There was nothing in it the first time but I still went back twice more!!
