With the onset of spring and the promise of gloriously sunny days, how many of us hope to hatch out from our rather rotund egg-shaped shells and emerge sylpa like, daring to bare all in a bikini without a bashful blush in sight?
More than 80% of women have cellulite, and even those who diet, exercise and maintain a healthy weight are not immune to its disfiguring effects. Even supermodels get it. I recently held a focus group on the subject, and the participants had various tales to tell of embarrassment, misguidance by cosmetic companies, and treatments making false claims.
They had all been seduced by cleverly promoted products or poor salon advice, and had come to a begrudging acceptance that they were stuck with it.
Cellulite is a vicious cycle involving hormones, cellular ageing, fluid retention and reorganisation of fat cells and connective tissues. We disguise our dimple behinds in well cut clothes, but there comes a time when our cellulite remains the final beauty frontier. Here is my professional opinion on some products on the market.
Topical application creams: No cosmetic product will deliver permanent results, some so called firming and toning creams last until they’re washed off. Others contain caffeine which is supposed to speed up toxin removal but actually removes toxins - in this case, caffeine itself - to the body.
Universal contour wraps: These provide superb inch loss and can provide an instant shape improvement to help you look your best for a special occasion however, as they work on the principal of water loss, they are not a permanent solution and can’t be used regularly to ‘cure’ cellulite. Electrical pulse treatments don’t waste your money.
Liposuction: Very effective at removing localised, subcutaneous fat, but not cellulite.

Endermologie: Kylie and Elle Macpherson are fans of this treatment. Some surgeons use it as a post-liposuction technology, as it tackles cellulite specifically. A state of the art device uses independent motorised cylindrical rollers to lift and stimulate the outer skin. It restores elasticity, dramatically increases blood flow and stimulates lymphatic drainage, revitalizing skin tone, making it soft and supple.
The maker of Endermologie, a French medical company called LPG, is a world leader in connective tissue technology. The procedure is the first in the world to diminish the appearance of cellulite, and you don’t need liposuction, or a specialist doctor, to have the treatment.
So is it worth the money? Yes. Endermologie costs around £55 per session and a course of 15 is recommended for maximum effect, but if your budget doesn’t stretch to this, try a healthy diet and regular exercise to make a difference in the long term. Get yourself a decent fake tan and drink two litres of mineral water a day to help your circulatory system to flush as many toxins from your body as possible.
