DGS overpayment

hi - I'm new to this thread so please be gentle with me.......
Right - back in 1998 I bought a Hotpoint washing machine and took out an extended warranty with DGS. I then forgot about it........
Here in 2013 I've just noticed a small Direct Debit entry on my bank account - something I previously thought was a Barclays charge or something (durrrrrrrrr).
I now discover that DGS have been taking £12 a month since 1998 (yep - 15 years) without me realising.
I've moved three times since then and have never signed anything / corresponded with DGS about this. The payments used to be quarterly it seems then changed to monthly. Surely at some point an insurer HAS to get clear insuree approval for such a policy or can they happily carry on regardless automatically assuming the policy is to be continued at whatever new price they decide?
Any advice anyone can offer? This amounts to about £1600 overpayment - quite a few brand new washing machines to be honest.......

I'm guessing that DGS have been sending you renewal information but as you have moved, you have not received it.
As far as I know, they can certainly keep auto-renewing insurance each year, many Companies use this method.
This is one example of why you should check your bank statements regularly
