  • I'm in the same boat as Sergeant Troy and I'm now thinking of the John Lewis "ortho" range. Has any one tried them?

I can report that in the past week I've bought a memory foam mattress online and am now bitterly regretting it.

A few years ago, having had several back ops and in great pain for years, I got myself a cheapish memory foam topper online which turned out to be a godsend, the solver of all my problems overnight.

The other day I decided to get myself a 'proper' memory foam mattress. I found one online which looked just the job, approaching tempur specs at only £379.

It's like sleeping on a board. I sink in about an inch, am getting no sleep at all, my old pains are back with a vengeance. I had telephoned the company for advice before buying and was told that from the many different versions they had on offer, this one would be ideal.

Now, of course, I realise that I wanted a soft memory foam which as an earlier poster above mentions, my shoulder and hips would sink into.

Fortunately one of the firm's selling points is a 60 Day Trial. Which involves a £65 surcharge and then only for an equivalent or more expensive replacement. When the one I want to change it for costs only £235! So no refund there then, just an extra £65 on top of the £379.

As I said, bad mistake. Specially considering I'm a disabled pensioner, living alone, and a neighbour took my old bed, which in truth was lovely and comfy depite its age, to the dump the day this one was delivered!

You gotta laugh. A memory foam experience I'm not likely to forget in a hurry.

Sergeant Troy, listen to what Pinkypants says. It makes absolute sense to me. Now.

I just posted this on another mattress thread so thought I'd copy and paste for your benefit!

My mattress is memory foam but I absolutely love it! It's pretty firm - I bought it on a recommendation from a friend who loved hers and still loves it several years on, and who said 'it's like sleeping on sand' and she's right! My boyfriend loves coming to stay and is jealous because it cost half the price of his memory foam mattress, which overheats and has gone saggy. Mine is still firm 2 years on and I don't overheat in it - I absolutely LOVE my bed and just can't beat the feeling when I lie down on it at night! Enough said! I'd go for the 10" thickness - that's what me and my friend both have. By the way, the ebay link is the same company I bought mine from 2 yrs ago with no problems

It's by Hypnia, it's actually quite a budget one, but it's also on Amazon and has 4.5 stars:

I had an expensive Tempur mattress and after just 3 years I was waking up with really bad lower back spasms. It would appear that as it got warm during the night it was losing firmness and I was lying in a dip.
I ended up doing research and came across this website
    http://www.factory-beds-direct.co.uk/
I then must have spent about a week reading all the various guides and readers' questions/answers. After this I did feel a lot more qualified to make a purchase.
I did checks on the various high street retailers and John Lewis but ended up buying from the above website, the best decision I could have made. Have had the new bed for about 9 months now.
Even if not buying from them it is well worth reading the website to be better informed, there is an awful lot of misinformation given out by bed manufacturers.

My family swears by firm mattresses by Sea Horse, they are a popular brand in Singapore and Hong Kong. They have a a showroom in London and offer home deliveries. They're not cheap but they last years, 10 years later they look exactly the same!
address for them on their website http://www.seahorsefurniture.co.uk

I have chronic back problems and cannot sleep on a firm mattress as it's so uncomfortable and painful. I also cannot sleep on slatted beds, I like a firm base with a sprung top.

I prefer a medium to soft mattress. If youu are sharing a bed make sure you try it out with your partner to see how much movement you feel when they fidget!

I'm looking for a new mattress as mine is now 10 year old. It does still have life left in it was a quality mattress but after sleeping in DD new bed while she was away I realised that it's on it's way out.

Bought DD this mattress . It is on the firmer side of medium but is incredibly comfortable and doesn't get hot. I found it a bit strange at first that it didn't seem to have much bounce but it's not hard.

I'm very tempted to get one for myself. It does only have a 5 year guarantee but that is in line I feel with it's price.

Poppy9, my mattress, the best I've ever had, is like that one. It's individual pocket springs with a very soft memory foam topping. It's a Kaymed. I can't stand memory foam mattresses, usually, but this one is great.
