Most of my weekend was spent figuring out the new Royal Mail volumetric system for inland post.

The previous weekend I'd sold 6 items, 3 for the uk and 3 for Europe - first sales I'd had for months.

So I used the weights of these 6 - dresses actually, so all under 1 kg but bulky so they would all have been over the 8cm depth. I did calculations for the heaviest and the lightest.

The heaviest one was working out only £2 more expensive to post out to Australia than it was to post to a uk address.
Europe was about the same or slightly cheaper for both.
For the lightest one uk Royal Mail medium parcel was the most expensive - it was cheaper to post to Australia

I've not done calculations yet for tops as they are a bit more problematic. If you sell a little silk cami then often its thin enough to be classified as a large letter.

But most tops with sleeves would have to go at the new small parcel rate.

For the last year most of the parcels I send to the uk have been £2.70 but now the same parcel would be £5.40  so I registered with myhermes on Sunday.

  • Watch out for this one. I previously took out a magazine sub with Dennis Publishing. I already paid the first £1 in January and cancelled the DD.

Now I just took out 3 more subs to get TCB c/b, so far so good, tracked and the £1s haven't gone out yet.

But on checking my a/c I see the one I cancelled has been reinstated!

Obviously I just cancelled it again right now but I guess the sneaky beggars were about to hit me for £20 or something.

Just saying - worth checking your DDs?

Another nail in the coffin for small sellers on ebay.

How do myhermes work? Can you drop parcels to a collection point?

I also signed up for MyHermes this weekend as their prices are so much cheaper than RM. If their delivery times are ok I will use them all the time.

They have alot of collection points in my area and fortunately the nearest is not much further than the Post Office.:)

It is also cheaper if you drop the parcels off at a collection point.

I would also like to add that if you refer someone who goes on to sign up and use the service, you get a 20% reduction. I don't know how this works as I have not done it yet. I presume it is 20% off the next parcel you send. I must look into it more!

my OH was looking at making some sort of stabilisers...he reckons he could knock something together but getting the co-ordination going on the pedals might be a problem :o to be honest he's been happy just being wheeled up and down the drive by us on it for now....:o

Sorry if this has already been mentioned as still playing catch up. Fairclaire - better than stabilisers take the pedals off for him. Find some gentle sloping hills (still remember the long sprint down steep hill when DS did this at Temple Newsham - he was delighted I was having kittens - caught him up eventually).

So they learn to balance, then later they learn to pedal easier than stabilisers - as they are learning one thing at a time - stabilisers help with pedalling but balance wise they come to rely on them. Hear what you are saying about his co-ordination - but if he might eventually do it then this way may be better . (Not sure if it will be cool enough for with other kids without pedals - but may only take a couple of weeks). HTH
