Spellbinders Dies

Options
Can any card makers out there tell me which way I should put the dies onto a patterned piece of paper. I always seem to do it wrong. Do I put the die onto the patterned side or onto the the blank back

Many thanks in advance

if you use a big shot you would put the patterned side face up and the die with the cutting edge facing down. if you want to emboss afterwards you need to keep the cut out shape in the die turn it up the other way and use your embossing mat on top , hope that makes sense
