Why do strawberries smell so flipping awful these days - I bought some and used half, the other half are now smelling so bad that I raked the fridge to find something which had gone off. Located the smell in the strawberry punnet. This has happened before - is there any reason for it cos I feel like putting them in the bin which isn't very money saving?

Because it's May    Are they *packaged in a protective environment* and airfreighted in?
Decent local strawberries won't be available until June. Wait until then and pick your own. They'll taste much better that way.

Does anyone know the best way to find out where to go to pick your own? I've never done it before, and don't know where to start!

Well with global warming May IS the new June! And no, they weren't packaged in a protective environment and airfreighted in!
Other than that... no idea then?0 -
Top tip for keeping your strawberries fresh and stop them going mouldy in the fridge. Pour boiling water over the strawberries, drain and store in an air tight container, keep in the fridge. It really does make your strawberries last longer

I always think the strawberries at my work (M&S) smell gorgeous. They are usually Spanish but there are British ones in our store now.
I think the pick your own idea is brill, I know a few people that have done that in previous years.0 -
They only seem to smell horrid once they have been opened and put in plastic container , are they reacting to the plastic maybe. Gonna try the boiling water thing though it sounds weird.0
