Can my neighbours mortgage my house?

Sorry, having a bit of trouble knowing where to put this.....

I have just opened my mail and in it is a Standard Life mortgage summary in my neighbours names but at my address. I feel sick.

It was in a window envelope and only the bottom part of my address up to the house name was visible. I opened it and thought it was junk mail.

I have just rung SL and they say it is a typing error?? I can't work that one out as we have house names and they are very different.

They told me to send the statement back. But, now I am worried, that the mortgage and subsequent charge may be on MY home, that this may affect my credit rating and more importantly, that I now know my neighbours mortgage details.

Is there anything else I can do than just send the statement back?

I would take a copy before sending the letter back. Also when you return it ask for reasurance in writting from the company that this was an error on their behalf and not some sort of scam.
Saying that i'm sure to get a nortgae on a property some sort of check is done with the land registry as you must own the property.

I'm sure its fine. The administrator at Standard Life will have been using postcode lookup, rather than type in the full address you put the postcode and the postcode lookup brings up all the adresses on that postcode then you select and click on the correct address. So all it would take is for the person at Standard Life to click your address rather than your neighbours address on the next line.

As Tesco say, just to be sure take a copy and ask for written confirmation from Standard Life.

I guess I was worrying over nothing then. Just seemed a bit odd. Our houses are about 1/2 mile apart and have just house names, there are no street names and the postcode is 1 digit different.

Ive just checked the Land Registry online (what a great site). I paid my £3 and actually my house is registered under the wrong name (it was not a house before). So I am none the wiser. Does anyone know how I update the name (from name of farm)

However, the site is good. http://www.landregisteronline.gov.uk/lro/servlet/TitleSearchServlet?searchType=map you can click on map enquiry and then on photo and get a great view of your house (google earth is cr*p where I live).

I think the best option is to ring the Land Registry and explain what has happend. When you say the house is registered under the wrong name, have you recently purchased the house? Land registry do take some time to update the records, mine took almost 6 months from purchase to show my name against the address.
