No, GD, you are not 'bias'. You are 'biased'.
Lord knows where this common howler sprang from but its consistent use on the web is driving me (even more) crazy.
Its a texting thing I believe......it will eventually ruin the language!Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

There is no shortage of land in Devon or Cornwall.
The price of building is quite modest.
There is however a huge problem in London which makes it impossible for MOST people actually born in London to buy even a modest property.EU tariff on agricultual product 12.2%

It isn't always possible for local people to be able to afford modest property in the second home honey spots either."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

I never get why people want to restrict others from purchasing what they want.Graham_Devon wrote: »Good idea I reckon, but then I am bias!
It's like restricting people purchasing more than 4 pints of milk in their local corner shop. That might work in communist Russia but not the UK.0 -
What has ex poet Laureate got to do with the price of cheese?
Cornwall was the first council to scrap the second home council tax discount. Most council members have admitted it's a jealousy tax rather than anything to do with services. They had to really - it was a getting a little silly arguing that second homers used the same services (and should pay 100%) whilst at the same time acknowledging that single occupiers used less and get a 25% discount. Just another national insurance.
I know some will welcome this but the tax burden is creeping up and should be challenged. A few years ago I bet there were lots of people in favour of taxing 'rich' people 40% on their income. Well the economy's done so well there are loads more rich people paying 40% tax - rejoice?
I have a second home and just tell myself that I'll drink two bottles of wine less a month but I'm saying this more and more - it's getting to the point where I'll have to spend some time sober!0 -

Think there is a shortage of houses though.
Kicking out the second homers will do very little to help. It's highly likely that the new occupants will be funded by the benefits system anyway. Instead of second home owners funding some council spending it'll be funded by central government instead i.e. the taxpayer at large.0 -

If indeed that is true, in a place with plenty of land, then either there are no jobs so people ought to move elsewhere or political consideration have interfered with the market to the detriment of those local people.
Either way the solution is with the hands of the locals.EU tariff on agricultual product 12.2%

I have little sympathy with rich boys buying up rural property to chill at the weekend. I have started to see it in our area (spillover from the cotswolds). It started with Shane Warne and Liz moving in down the road and has gradually got worse. I have no issue with building on greenbelt for local kids, I have big issues with people 'escaping' from the city and killing the local community spirit, which was key to our move. If you cant get involved in the parish council, help out with weeding the local cricket pitch and make it to the local for at least one pint a week, p*ss off. We dont want you.0
