Having just purchased 1/2 a ton of coal for 170 pounds, you can imagine how we felt when a receipt was found for 1/2 a ton from 1967, for the grand total of 7 pounds 11 shillings and 8 pence.
The BOE inflation calculator says we should have paid around 120 pounds.
Do you think if I write to Merv quick before he goes, I'll get an answer as to why their inflation calculator is 50 pounds out?
And Miss Maple Leaf, who is going to be taking over Mervs job, believes that inflation targets are mistaken!!!

Coal itself may not have gone up more that inflation (although it is increasingly rare in domestic homes) but the delivery costs will probably have risen a lot quicker?Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0

I don't doubt that transport costs have risen, but the cost of an item includes all costs along the way.
And if it is in the basket then it is in the basket, maybe that's how they massage the figures, leave such items as coal out of the basket.
Or am I being cynical?

Just be glad when e green idiots shut down drax. Price of coal will fall through the floor. You can get better discounts with bulk buy (we recently stoked up on 100 25 kg bags). You can shave a few quid extra off per 25 kg bag.0

What does that mean? If Drax is shut then coal prices will fall?'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -

Doesn't mean coal will fall for the residential market.
Probably the wrong sort and even if it was, no doubt the lack of volume will lead to increased costs of extraction."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Coal used to be sold at a loss by the NCB I believe. I think they used to use marginal cost pricing.0
