Fine dining, paying upwards of £50 for botttles of wine, paying thousands a month for premium childcare when they earn around average salaries that kind of thing, it reminds me a bit of the harry enfield sketch with the rich scousers being better than everyone as they have money, except the people im referencing dont, well no more than most at least

But its not so much the actual things they do, theres nothing wrong with any of that, its the attitde that comes with it

Its not a massive deal, just something i have observed

How can someone earning less than £30,000 pay £24,000 plus for childcare? Are you exaggerating?

OP, what does it matter to you , or anyone else, what people spend their hard earned money on.
If you want to pee it up against a lamppost and he wants to send his kids to the most expensive childcare........That's each persons choice .

As another poster pointed out, These little jokes /digs or whatever you want to call them are aimed at keeping people(usually working class) in their place. surprisingly you will find it is the same working class(whatever that is now) who aim their blows at other working class people who shock/horror choose to do something that is classed as "posh/ middle class.

Just want to point out that disabled people come in all classes, and in all tax classes.

I was referring quite obviously to the massive cuts in benefits for disabled people which has less of an impact if you have a couple of million in the bank if you have sweet FA you are screwed.. And there are actually more disabled people living in poverty than there are more elevated classes. The income difference can mean the difference between attending hospital appointments and missing them.

I was wondering that too WW!

    Tricky one really.

My DDs go to a school with a fairly affluent catchment area and I do sometimes roll my eyes (in my head, not visibly!) When I hear some of the 'problems' the mums have. But its not their fault money is tight in our house so I certainly wouldn't make jokes that could be construed as digs at their lifestyle.

Is class really about money? I don't think so!

I believe class is an attitude of mind. I can believe I am x class while others might perceive me y or w class.

Actually I don't think about what class I am at all, nor do I care.

I believe class is about feeling superior or inferior, why do you think there is a new word in the class discussion, chav.

that is about people feeling superior!

I disagree - if anyone feels superior to anyone this is not class related, it is being a snob and snobbery is not confined to any class.

Someone might feel superior to someone as they drive a BMW and the other person drives a clio - however the person driving the BMW could still be working class (although a snob who thinks he is better than he is) and the person driving the clio could be upper class but just likes the car.

Among the working class someone might feel superior as they have a branded pair of trainers (again they are a snob) - but this does not mean they are not working class.

To me the difference class is about family background and access to money

Working class - Parents having non (or semi) skilled jobs (Factory work, shop work, admin ect) and that you personally have to work for what you want.

Middle Class - Parents having skilled or professional jobs, and being financially able to help you - giving you some help with a house deposit, University fees etc and being able to give you money for a car etc. (Note - I have said being financially able too - not that they actually do)

Upper Class - Parents owning business's and employing others to do the work for them.

    To me its simple

Working Class - Working for everything you have achieved
Middle Class - Working for most things in life but having a little help along the way.
Upper Class - Not having to work

I do not think you can move between class but your children can, I am working class but have a degree and a professional job, so my children (If I have any) will be middle class.

You believe you are working class, that's fine, it doesn't stop me from thinking you are another class, middle or upper.

Many people work for everything they have achieved, they would not all say they are working class!

I resent people trying to pigeon- hole me because of what my father did for a living and whether he was able to help with a house deposit or not. And as for your analysis of the situation... What a load of tosh. These days there is no point in trying to work out someone's "class" because it is irrelevant.

In my personal circumstances, my father is a doctor, I went to a private school and I went to university. However... I left home with £40 to my name and two bags of clothes and that's it. I have worked damn hard for everything I have. I won the scholarship that allowed me to go to the School i did. It's all been down to my graft that I have been able to buy my own house by myself. The crummy jobs I had to slog through and the working 2 jobs. All me and my ancestry has nothing to do with it. I am no better than anyone else, I don't see myself as superior in any way. I choose to live my life as well as I can, being kind and generous. If you want to judge me, then please do so on this and not what my fathers occupation is

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

    Now there's a sign of privilege. ;)

It would be lovely if class really was irrelevant, but it actually has a huge impact on people's opportunities, choices and even their health.
