Mortgage PPI Claimin

Hi All,
Wondering if I could get some direction please. Myself and my husband had a mortgage with Halifax which we started in November 2003 and ended around January 2007. We were definitely sold PPI, because we did try to claim on it when my husband needed an operation and we needed to see if we could afford for him to take the time off work he needed to. We applied for the sickness side of the PPI, but they said that it was exempt because my husband was self employed. We kicked up a bit of a fuss because obviously we'd been paying towards something that we couldn't claim on, but they said it was part of the mortgage. It was with Halifax.
I have since tried to find out about reclaiming the PPI, but as it's been over 6 years, the bank said that they have no records of it, so effectively tough luck. I don't have any records because the papers were all destroyed when we ended the mortgage in 2007 (we moved into accommodation supplied with my husband's new job).
Is there anything else I can do. It's frustrating because I know we had it, and I know it was mis-sold, but as I didn't keep the details, they know we're stuck!
