How much for a free range chicken?

Hi all :hello:
Would be really grateful if anyone who buys whole free range chickens could give me some prices to compare with. I've never bought/cooked a whole bird before (:o) but the farm that my chicken/pork comes from charges £4.72/kg (for a min 1.5kg chicken). Is this about right?
Thanks muchly x

I just checked out mysupermarket.co.uk and free range chickens are selling in my local asda and tesco for £3.58 per kilo.

That doesn't sound unreasonable. Expect to pay more for Organic. (Best for welfare standards). The advantage you have buying from the farm is that they might be able to tell you more about where the bird came from - all the better if it's supporting a local farmer. Unfortunately I have struggled to find a local source for chicken so end up buying in the supermarket - but I'd prefer not to. I have bought from a local butcher who said that it was free range, then got home and found the black marks on the legs that battery hens get
I know a lot of people here buy value chicken, but I just can't. We have it less often and I am the queen of rubber chicken0 -
Yes tbh I would really prefer not to buy any meat from supermarkets, hopefully as I get my overall shopping price down I'll be able to afford to do that but for now its just poultry and pork as generally (not always I'm sure) cows and sheep are out in fields anyway.
I buy through a box scheme, from these people

It tells you more about them here

I think given the price of supermarket chickens quoted above I shall place an order, thanks everyone!:heart2: Mumma to DD 13yrs, DD 11yrs & DS 3 yrs. :heart2:0 -

It's a minefield isn't it0 -
It certainly is, I first started educating myself about food a little under a year ago and although I've learnt so much and made changes accordingly throughout that time I still feel I've got a long way to go!:heart2: Mumma to DD 13yrs, DD 11yrs & DS 3 yrs. :heart2:0

http://www.happymeats.co.uk/ is amazing, their chicken is £3.70 kg. However, they charge a lot for delivery. We're lucky enough to live close by so don't have delivery.
I only buy free range chicken (preferably organic too) I know some people will think that's a massive luxury but we too would rather have a chicken once a month rather than every week and know it's a "proper" chicken and we'd rather cut down on other things to afford that. Each to their own though.
I will buy organic/free range meat in the supermarket if it's reduced though and I happen to be in there.0 -
My local butcher sells free range birds of about 1.75 kg for around £7.50 so the price you're looking at is a little high but not outrageous.0
