Car Question

Mulling things over, as you do - my car insurance renewal is due in June. Which clearly I don't want to have to pay, since I've stopped paying for the car! If I ring the finance company and tell them I can't / won't be making any more payments will they relieve me of the car straight away, or will they drag it out for weeks / months?
And handing them the car back - that's not going to come over as favouring a creditor in any way is it?
