So to clarify, he needs to wait for his P60, then write to his tax office (or THE tax office) explaining the situation and include his bank details and ask for a bank transfer?

Yes and no. He should send his P60 as you suggest clearly outlining his employment (or lack of) history for the year explaining what he was doing before the job started and can also provide bank details but as he won't need to complete a tax return any repayment would be in the form of a cheque posted to his bank rather than a bank transfer in the normal sense.
