Free Microsoft Office (web-based)

Noticed this wasn't listed in the free office software listing so thought i'd post for the benefit of those who haven't seen it yet.

There is a free web-based version of Microsoft office for anyone with a (free) Microsoft Account. A lot of people I know have found it useful as they did not like the free office options as they were so familiar with the Microsoft version.

Go to https://www.outlook.com and sign up for a free account. Log in, click the down arrow next to the Outlook logo and select Skydrive.

Click Create, and you get the option to create a new Word, Excel, PowerPoint or OneNote document. These web apps are similar to the standard Office programs, but are more limited in features than their installable counterparts. Given most people don't use 99% of the features of these things it is fine for most people.

I for example now use this to do my financial spreadsheets and find it suits my usage fine. You can even upload existing excel spreadsheets and open/edit them in the web version.

These can either be stored in Skydrive (which you get 7GB free space when you sign up), or downloaded in standard MS Office format.

One thing to look out for though is the Excel web app for example will automatically save when you make changes. The Word web app requires manual saving before you exit.

I hope this has helps someone who would have otherwise purchased Office but finds that these Web versions fit their needs for free.
