My references are being checked prior to interview, is this usual? I have no problem with it, it just struck me as strange.
I freely admit to being out of touch with the whole applying for a job thing.

It's not entirely unusual, especially if there are only a few candidates who are being interviewed and they want to make an appointment as quickly as possible.
It means that, having obtained references prior to interview, they can make an offer to the successful candidate without making it subject to the receipt of satisfactory references.
It may also help referees who are sometimes put in a difficult situation when they know an offer has been made and if the offer is not confirmed know that the candidate may well blame them for giving a poor reference.0 -
