Cheaper than highlighting

Options
I can no longer afford trips to hairdresser for blonde highlights due to redundancy.

Also I've recently been diagnosed with psorasis and the treatment for that strips colour out of hair.

So can anyone recommend a good home dye I can use for staying blonde?

What colour is your natural hair? If its quiet dark you need a bleach to lift the colour or you just end up with ginger hair as the bleach in bottle colours isn't enough to lift dark hair to light.

I have light/medium brown hair naturally and when I apply bottle dye always end up with a gingery tone. I can't afford to go hairdressers myself. I just today coloured my roots with Schwarzkopf Color Mask from superdrug for £3.99 and its the best home dye i've used and I have used like every brand. It was still slightly ginger but barely noticeable unlike every other bottle dye brand and my hair feels soft and looks amazing and silky. I also recommend getting the purple shampoo that helps tone down any brash in hair. I've been using touch of silver for when I dyed my hair last time and it went a horrible ash colour and it sorted problem out. Its not expensive either about £2 a bottle.

If the colour is going to be stripped from your hair with treatment then why not go for semi-permant it won't lift your hair to blonde if its dark but it covers grey.

Or could you not go to a college and get it done by trainee hairdressing students for real cheap.
  • Thank you.

I know it sounds daft but psorasis is unsightly and I just wouldn't want to go to a hairdresser even the students.

So really looking for an all over blonde now I can just do myself at home cheaply and touch up when necessary. As they say practise makes perfect!

Just need a recommendation for which hair colour to choose on the shelf. There's such a choice and as you said blonde isn't easy at home.

Can't go back to natural and going grey isn't an option either.

    Help please!

Research suggests coconut oil protects hair from protein loss/ damage due to both UV light and peroxide, might be worth trying it as your deep conditioner? If you don't have psoriasis on your scalp you could just cover your hair entirely with a close fitting cotton cap.

When I was blonde I used a Boots own brand and people regularly thought the result was natural, moved onto a branded and was never happy with the results. I currently lift the roots with Garnier Nutrisse Radiant Blondes before dying pink: no sulphate surfactants so gentler on sensitive skin (I have eczema/ dermatitis) that most brands.

BUT it does seems to be heat sensitive, if your room/ head is cool it works much slower. And it won't lift many shades, you haven't said how dark you are. The stronger the product, the better the lift but the harsher it will be on your skin (bleach/ peroxide works in alkaline conditions and skin is acidic.

Whatever you choose please do a strand and patch test. :o

  • If you have a Sally's near you then they stock all of the professional colours (wella and the like). The staff in there are really good at advising.

I have been using the same wella colour on my roots for a while because I couldn't afford the touch ups at the salon and my hair is so grey now.

What I normally do is go to the hairdressers every 6 months or so for highlights and then in between I do the roots myself. In fact, I am going later on today for my highlights. Last time was August. Is this something you could do?

Also, I believe home 'blonding' can be quite tricky, so I wonder if it might be better to change your colour slightly to something easier to maintain.
  • Thanks for replies!

I do have scalp psorasis and the treatment shampoos used to control this are very harsh and just strip out colour from hair. So spending money at hairdressers for expensive highlights is out for me, probably forever !

Yes going blonde can be a tricky business doing it yourself but just wondered if anyone would recommend a make of home colour they use because it was easy to use and the result was good?

You mean the shampoos strip the natural colour from your hair or the dye/ or both? You might try sealing the colour and structural proteins in with coconut oil treatments, or condition-wash-condition (wet, apply conditioner to the lengths to protect them, shampoo the scalp, rinse the lot), or try a sulphate surfactant free shampoo. Some people find going sulphate free improves their psoriasis - tho others do not - the damn stuff is in most/ all of the prescription treatments and is proven to damage the skin barrier down to 1%. :(

I *think* Neutrogena T/Sal (not same as T/Gel) is sulphate free, you might ask a pharmacist or your doctor about it if you haven't already tried and discounted it? I believe salicylic acid strips colour much less than coal tar shampoos, perhaps because the hair cuticle is closed at an acidic pH.

Also heard of people using a nozzle bottle to apply diluted treatments to the scalp without significantly contacting hair.
