Help needed please!

Hi all,

I am planning to spend the afternoon batch cooking a variety of meals for during the week and have a question!

I am planning to make chicken and veg soup for my lunches for work in the slow cooker, but I have forgotten to defrost the chicken breast :o (only using one as there will be plenty of veg to bulk it up lol).

How can I defrost it quickly but safely? I was going to put it on defrost in the microwave, but have no idea how long to give it

If not in the microwave, how long would it take using the cold water method? I intend to cook straight away, so it would not be lying about gaining nasty bacteria!!

Any advice greatly appreciated,

Thanks, Sarah xx

The quickest way to defrost meat is to hold it under cold running water. It's not *that* economical but it's what I've always been advised to do by EHOs. I personally don't like defrosting meat in the microwave, I always find that the bits around the edges start to cook and it goes a bit tough, but you could try a minute or so and then do the cold water method.

Got to agree, doesn't go nice when defrosted in microwave even if I follow the directions on the defrost settings on mine still get bits 'cooking' and they go like rubber.

Cold water method can help, single breasts don't take that long to defrost anyway usually.
One day I might be more organised...........

You can defrost it in the microwave and it won't take long at all, but it depends on your make and model and where the defrost button is. You could nuke it on very low.

However, as it's only a breast it won't take long to defrost anyway. Try sitting it in water for a while or, as has been said, under running water, until it's flexible and the ice has gone. That's what we used to do with whole chickens and turkeys before we had a microwave.
