Camera won't connect to laptop

I have a Samsung L100 camera which is no longer able to connect to my laptop. They have worked perfectly together for a couple of years, until now. When I connect the camera, I get a message that tells me the USB device is no longer recognised. I have tested the USB ports of the laptop with other devices and there is no problem, except for when I try to connect the camera.
Any ideas?

I thought the USB cable might be faulty, so I emailed Samsung to find out about getting another one. They never even mentioned any possible fault with the cable.
They suggested going on their website to get a firmware update. So I went to the part of the website they gave but there were no updates there. I told them that and they said there are no firmware updates, and to give them my serial number to organise repairs. The serial number wore off the sticker on the bottom of the camera when it was only a few months old. I contacted Samsung about that at the time, but they did nothing about it.0
