travel from Coventry/Birmingham to Plymouth

Hello I have a problem and was wondering if someone could help. I need to travel from Coventry (or Birmingham, whichever is easiest) to Plymouth at some point in mid April to view a flat, and travel back on the same day. Everywhere I've looked for coaches and trains is going to cost me and my partner over £200 return which isn't really doable. I've seen that the mega bus offers £5 tickets on wednesdays which is fine, but their last buses run at 3.30pm which is no good as the earliest we can arrive in Plymouth on the megabus is 2.30pm and we're going to need time to actually find the place and look around. Staying overnight in a guest house isn't an option as I have two dogs at home that I wouldnt leave overnight. Even a single ticket for a national express bus or coach home would be £50 each and I don't want to spend £100 just to get us both home. Is there any way of travelling back from Plymouth to the Midlands cheaply? Thank you

However there's no guarantees of being able to do it in the time.

If you really can't leave the dogs, the two options would be finding a B&B which would take them (and that's not going to be easy), or just one of you going. I can understand that you both want to see the place, but if you can't find any affordable alternatives I can't think of any other way.

At least these days you can probably skype and send photos / videos etc on the spot.
