Job Interview for welfare officer

  • I have UK Law and Legislate Apps on my Ipad, anything you can get to casually browse around the Law IMHO is a good thing. With Legislate I can download Legislation to Evernote and read it at my Leisure.
I also have a couple of book recomendations I have seen courtesy of the wonderful Haldane Society of Michael Mansfield QC. So I have 'Bonfire of the Liberties' New Labour, Human Rights and the Rule of Law' Keith Ewing. which so far is an horrifying explication of how New Labour has torn into Civil Rights and Liberties despite Blair being a Barrrister.(these swearword lawyers make the worst opposition), despite of headlines to the opposite.
I am teaching myself DIY Law School with rise of Litigants in person I would rather be aware of Torts, sale of goods etc as far as humanly possible.
You have to be able to fit your welfare training into a Post LASPO environment.
My big question is Are you ready for a full blown interview with a welfare rights agency? you seem unprepared.
what I would do is cancel the interview and do what I do and others here have recommended and aim to do a really smashing voluntary post before reapplying humbly admitting mistake and then going for it with great and wonderous gusto for the potential welfare rights advisor you are.
As others on MSE will tell you there have been redundancies of welfare rights and a holocuasat on the Law centres. Lawyers are being made redundant.
But I would rather aim to be legally aware and welfare aware than not and if an opportunity comes your way grab it with both hands.
provided you manage the benefits angle right if you are on benefits.
Benefits and work should how to manage voluntary work without falling foul of the system as a conventional application would do.
    best of luckxx

Rights net is accessible but you can only post if you are in the Profession with authenticated credentials but a real treasure trove with regard to discussions.
Benefits and work will wake you up to the unjust horrors going on and its legally backed.

Everyone on MSE thinks I am NOT mse for promoting benefits and work but I think the knowledge on it is a worthwhile thing for a wee fee a year and no benefits bashing!!!
I listen to legal podcasts and read legal sites!!!
I also grab Papers etc if I can from legal site and articles as you soon learn a lot if you read them. Hence an amateur legal bias.

  • Ideally one would have a full monty Law Degree with student advocacy and mooting with Jurisprudence.
Jurisprudence is the philosophy of law crucial to getting behind the legal philosophy of various legislation.
Ideally (now in outright fantasy land) one would do Barrister training even if you never got a contract as effective advocacy would be a key skill to ADVOCATE for your clients.
You need a good academic brain with a degree from a research based university Russell group or the second tier below that. Philosophical ability going hand in hand with practical hands on case experience.
People here will disagree with me because of benefits and work and think I am lilly livered etc but that's how I would go forward if I was in your shoes.

any news OP did you get the job?

Seeing as you seem to have successfully managed to derail yet another thread, the OP may not want to report back.
  • I don't think providing relevant information for the OP is derailing the thread.

  • Hi
Thanks for all your posts, I have not heard back yet!!!
The job seemed to consist of taking all the customers details, advising about benefits and then doind more back office work to pass to senior who would deal with recons/appeals etc, A good starting point to learn more about the welfare system and hopefully progress, I still surprised about how easy the interview was, I do know I have a lot of tough competition so just keeping fingers crossed, They would of finished interviews yesterday I believe so it should'nt be much longer.:D

OP if you don't get the job and are interested in this line of work, I really recommend applying to be a volunteer CAB adviser. The training is excellent and sometimes paid jobs do come up within the organisation.
I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.
  • Ah well, I still not heard anything so I am guessing I did not get the job, I think I will try CAB so thank you for all your help x
  • Hi
Just popped by to say (if anyone sees this lol|)
I did not get the job but apparantly was very close, just got pipped by someone who had previous experience, I was told not to be put off applying again when another post becomes available, I think I will as people have suggested try to volunteer for CAB and see how that works out, thanks everyone :)
