    They are being helped along by "green propaganga" though. I have heard a few people saying that they've installed various things (solar, turbines etc) knowing that there is a very long payback time, but the mainstream press and web seems to go for a 5-10 years (or less) payback. Not surprising that people are inclined to believe the sales patter.

    Installing in the correct geographic location plays a major part. Living in a house once called Windy Ridge, loosing the roof two years ago and the greenhouse this winter I suspect the top of my garden would be a perfect spot.

    I would really like a VAWT to run my outdoor electricity and as an experiment, smaller, more efficient and not requiring the height of a traditional turbine.

    It certainly does if you're in an AONB - as you more than likely need planning permission for solar panels and wind turbines!
