In my experience of working as a debt counsellor, a bad credit score does not prevent anyone from getting a basic bank account.

Even undischarged bankrupts get them, quite easily.

Barclays do BBA for undischarged bankrupts too.

    There are other reasons, maybe.

They would not be able to remortgage, but they can get a Basic Account no problem at all.

Barclays are excellent for basic accounts for people with low income/credit problems

Abbey will not give them but HSBC will.

Try and get yourself another account - it sounds to me like you might be struggling debt wise, get some professional advice don't bury your head in the sand whatever you do it will come back and bite you on the bum and just make things worse.

The four that are brilliant are -

    The Abbey
    The Co-op
    Barclays
    Nationwide

All these four will give undischarged bankrupts a Basic Account plus a cashcard, or in the case of the Co-op, a visa electron.

That is very interesting and I will ask my personal banker tomorrow in the morning meeting what they will do if they credit check and it gets declined on a current account. My understanding was if declined then no chance to get an account.

One does learn new things once in a while ;)

Remember that a BBA does not have a cheque book or an overdraft facility.

Some banks don't allow any Direct Debits on a BBA.

Some banks don't have any cashcard facilities.

Some banks will provide a cheque writing service.

Everyone is entitled to a Basic Bank Account, that is why they were introduced.

The usual reason for decline is an issue with fraud.

Some folks have three or more basic accounts, just to keep money separate.

The reason I used an undischarged bankrupt as an example is because they have such bad credit!

Here is a link to compare Basic Bank Accounts -

    http://www.moneyfacts.co.uk/banking/bestbuys/banking_basic_bank_accounts.aspx

Thought it might be helpful to some folk.

Basic bank accounts are also used by folks with an IVA - most of them have CCJ's, Defaults, etc. so are in adverse credit status too - have not found any of the banks mentioned who would not allow them a BBA. Nor any of the big four when bankruptcy is or has been involved.
  • i had a similar situation about 4/5 few years ago when my bank closed my account and i had to withdraw all my money out and walk through town to take it to another bank who luckily let me open a "basic" bank account. i was bad with money then and did keep withdrawing money and not using the bank account as i should but it was a difficult time my husband had lost his job etc.

The point i want to make is that you can recover and even though i now only have a basic bank account i LIKE IT THAT WAY! i have no temptation with debit/credit cards and i have no overdraft AND NO CHARGES. You can live this world with out it.!The bank now falls over its self to try and get me to have theses things and i smugly say no.!!!

ps...the bank who closed my account is the bank i am currently asking for £3500.00 in charge back!!!

revenge is a dish served cold!!!

proud to be dealing with my debt.
