"Premium" Wages varying

I get paid a Sunday "premium" which goes on my wage slip as an extra third per hour.

Now, we had Easter Sunday, store was closed, we were all only paid basic wages for day off.

I took a day's holiday on a Sunday - I didn't get the Sunday premium

The whole reason this "premium" was added was to make it fair between the part-timers and full-timers. As they are contracted for five days per week and if they have a Sunday off then it's a shorter day so they are clocking up extra time off (hope that makes sense).

Perhaps the premium was introduced a long time ago when workers could opt out of working on Sundays.

As it's an additional sum and not included in the hourly rate, then I would have thought you can only expect the basic rate and not receive the enhanced figure when you don't actually work on a particular day.

If you work more hours on another day of the week (that is the working day is longer) you would automatically receive more because of the number of hours. [Sorry I don't know that statement is very clear!!]

It was only introduced in January due to the part-timers refusing to work Sundays

  • Really a question for your payroll department but maybe its only payable if you actually work the day?
Happy riding on two or three

So the premium was to encourage people to work Sundays, ie they get the money if they work on a Sunday. It seems not unreasonable to me therefore not to pay the premium if no work is done on a particular Sunday.

The premium was to stop the full timers working Sunday (a shorter day 5.25 hours) and expecting a full day off in the week (7.5 hours) and therefore gaining an extra 2.25 hours off work and paid per week.

It just doesn't seem fair
