Did the electrician unplug the boiler from the socket before testing?

He might have launched 500v down the supply, when testing insulation, to the boiler.

Reset is the mains switch on the facia of the boiler.

    it's not on mine,
Strange as it may seem not all boilers are the same. Do you have the same make/model as the OP?

    Cheers

    I didn't say the o/h reset ;)

With no display you won't know what the fault code is.

SouthCoast I think it's a Potterton - years old, pilot light type. I'm at work all day, but I need to redo the timer tonight after a power cut a day ago (and a cold shower last night) so I'll get the model then.

However - on a mate's boiler his switch was plainly visible under the control flap, and just googling it this morning I've found several manufacturers instruction manuals showing it to be available to the user - for example http://www.idealheating.com/downloads/manuals/200547_users.pdf

However, it seems to be that the more modern condensing boilers - like the OP's do have their switch where only GRI's should be looking.

But going back to the OP - having looked at the manual for your Glow Worm its says this (under User Instructions)

    http://www.glow-worm.co.uk/stepone/data/downloads_sd/51/00/00/cxi-range.pdf

"Turn the Mains Reset Switch to 0, wait for 5 seconds, turn Mains Reset Switch to 1, the boiler is reset.
If the fault persists contact your installer/service provider using the telephone number on the inside font cover of
    this booklet"

    Have you tried that?
