Help - boiler won't switch on.

Can anyone help me?

We have had an electrician in today to do some testing and the mains have been on and off several times. After he left, I noticed our boiler won't come on. The digital display is completely dead. We have no heating and no hot water.

I called him back and he tested the power lines going into the boiler and had a look at the fuse inside the circuit board. Apparently power is going into the boiler, the fuse is ok and so is the power socket it is plugged into.

We have a digital thermosat downstairs which talks to a small square box upstairs. The upstairs box connects to the boiler and is also plugged into a power socker in the wall nearby. The box upstairs with the boiler has a green light showing it is on and talking to the downstairs box but also has a red 'alarm' light on it.

The boiler is a Glow Worm 24cxi. I can call a plumber/boiler person out on Monday morning but wondered if there is anything I can do myself.

I've tried following the instructions in the boiler manual to re-set it but nothing works?

Is it possible it has shut itself down because it stayed plugged in when the mains were being flicked on and off all day? Will it come back to life? It was working perfectly this morning before the electrician came. I don't have any reason to think the electrician has broken it by the way.

There is often a small button that can trip - it can be tucked away inside the control panel and may look like this..

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18479718 the topmost picture in the thread.

It takes a very slight press and will give a tiny click - if you can find one, see if it's that.

Sorry if this sounds like I am being thick, but if I can find this button is it safe for me to press it or do I need to turn the electricity off or anything please?

turning the room stat down for a few secs then turning it back up should sort out the red light on the reciever, however I don't think this will sort the boiler, if you have no display at all & have power going to the boiler then I would say that either the display board or the pcb has failed, it could well be that it was going to fail anyway but turning the power on & off & possibly testing the electrics while the boiler was working has blown one of them
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

if there is no display at all it's not the overheat stat, although this may have tripped as well

I've turned the thermostat up and down but the red light won't go out on the received :-(

Thanks for the advice. Should I try finding the re-set button under the boiler cover or leave it for the professionals?

the re-set button isn't under the control panel it's inside the boiler which you shouldn't access, plus as i said it won't help if you have no display

Thank you. Will call a professional out on Monday morning.

(SIGH - this all started off as a project to simply put new light and power socket covers on, which led to part of the house being rewired, which today has resulted in the boiler failing after the electrician came to do some prep work)

it's not on mine, it's just inside the cover/flap at the bottom you pull down to access the controls.

What testing did he do? If the electrician did not switch off the boiler at the mains, some testing is more likely to cause a problem with something like a boiler than simply switching on and off a bit too much.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'
