doctors sick note - works says its an unauthorized absence ??

hi there

a family member has a sick note from the doctor for 2 months off work , the employer has this sick note.

a representative came knocking on his door yesterday saying he has to see one of their doctors.

are they allowed to come round to your premises when you are off with a sick and they have your sick note.

the said his absence is unauthorised? how can this be classed as this? when he has a sick note from there doctor.

can they make you see one of there doctors? , many thanks

Yes, employers can, but I dont think they should be doorstepping anyone at home when they are off sick, its very poor pratice and Id be complaining. It happens if someone is off on long term sick, but some bosses are trying to use illness to get staff to retire or take redundancy, my mum is a teacher and her bosses have introduced an any more than 3 absences in a year policy they will refer you to occupational health which is the first step in dismissal (it shouldnt be used like that but sadly some employers are doing that).

Ive suffered from work related stress in the past and been harassed by bosses while I was ill but not to the extent of someone turning up on my doorstep.

I think a home visit is common if a person is absent for quite a while - but in my experience that's only been if it's an unauth'd absence rather than sickness.

Is there any reason why your family member would not want to see the company doctor?

It is the first step in the absence management policy, which may lead to dismissal, but also may lead to the employee being able to return to work more quickly with the relevant support.

I don't understand why anyone would be shocked by this? If he is really sick and has nothing to hide then I don't really see the problem. If they turned up with a bag full of work then I would understand!
