Gym price increase

Hi All,

Just abit of advice

I joined a council run gym in September last year, its a couples membership so me and my best friend are on it (dont ask!)

It was a 12 month contract with a no cancellation clause

Anyway they have written to us both saying that the prices are due to increase on the 1st April.

I dont see how this is fair considering we entered into a 12 month contract at a specific price. Its only £3/4 increase each per month but its the principle.

Is it worth writing to them?
Dec 2012:
Natwest Overdraft: £1600; Natwest Loan: £1000; Credit Card: £500; Hire Purchase: £2500

April 2013:
Natwest Overdraft: £0 - cancelled!; Natwest Loan: £0 - paid off!; Credit Card: £0 - paid off!; Hire Purchase: £1200 - getting there!

What does the contract say about price increases?

Normally they write in the terms and conditions that they are allowed to raise the price within a certain margin but you'd need to read your own terms and conditions regarding that. Mobile phones seem to be able to do this and I've heard of Virgin Media doing this to a few friends after only one or two months of signing up, totally legally (my friends bill went from being £30 to over £50 a month!).

If you do think it will be a problem for you, try speaking to a manager and seeing if they can help you out.
  • I would argue I signed a 12 months agreement based on a fixed price like other gyms. And If they did not give appropriate notice of price changes you have a right to cancel.

Read the terms and conditions they can only increase the price if you have agreed to it in the contract, they may have made an error in writing to you whilst in the fixed term.

That's poor advice which could end up trashing your credit record.
